Dance theatre in Alto Adige

Founded in Alto Adige in 2005, Alps Move is a dance theatre festival that has developed in close relationship with the Alto Adige Dance Collective. Its aim is to host and promote the local contemporary dance and experimental theatre scene with performances in venues throughout the province and the creation of a network that reaches out to other regional, national and European theatre groups and organizations.

Each year Alps Move stages shows and performances created by choreographers and dancers originally from Alto Adige, many of whom now pursue their careers further afield. Regardless of age, all these artists are invited to work on new projects to be performed – and often premiered – back in Alto Adige during the October-November Festival.

Dance destinations

Apart from the productions held in Merano and Bolzano, the Collective also seeks out new dance venues and promotes fresh input by performing in smaller towns such as Lana, Brunico, Silandro, Bressanone and Ortisei, where cultural events are otherwise less numerous.

The festival productions have also taken part in the streets of town centres, in private residences, in castles and in a variety of different institutional structures, including Eurac, the Museion (Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art) and the Mercantile Museum in Bolzano.

Connecting people, artists, genres and disciplines

Encounter and exchange are central to the festival, which aims to promote interface between people variously involved in dance, both here in Alto Adige and further afield. By getting to know each other, they are often stimulated to work together on different projects. This is particularly so with artists currently working outside Italy: apart from enriching our programs, their participation also often leads to showcasing local productions elsewhere in Italy and in Europe, thereby nurturing cultural exchange. Over the years Alps Move productions have been staged in Berlin, Turin, Milan, Bari, Frankfurt, Barcelona, Hannover, Kassel, Bilbao and many other European cities.

Since 2006 the festival has also produced 4 shows of its own in collaboration with choreographers Rhys Martin, Remo Rostagno and Arthur Rosenfeld.

In view of its firm belief in interdisciplinarity, Alps Move regularly works with photographers, musicians, video makers and poets to create shows that essentially focus on movement and the body, but transcend the constraints of genre.

Dance and  young people

Alps Move and the Dance Collective have always striven to introduce young people to dance, staging a number of shows in schools and promoting projects aimed at involving kids in the production of shows.

These include the Community Dance Project, where local dancers and choreographers create meaningful productions with children and students. Their shared motto is: “Everyone can dance!”
