BALAL
The concept on which Balal is built relates to the Tower of Babel and the growth of confusion in the contemporary world.
The Tower of Babel was planned by a king who wished to challenge God by reaching up to Heaven. God reacted by introducing confusion among the languages used on earth, so that people could no longer understand each other, or agree over how to complete the tower.
In the course of the millennia this story has become a paradigm of man’s presumption and his desire for limitless power.
The performance uses the language of contemporary dance to examine human behaviour in present-day society, where arrogance, individualism, presumption, egocentrism and narcissism clearly prevail. Such widespread abuse of power fosters confusion and division as society heads towards liquefaction.
How can people be encouraged to reflect on the human condition? How can we build a new social order?

Stefania Bertola
Stefania Bertola, dancer, choreographer and teacher, trained as a dancer in Bolzano. She then pursued her study path in various cities including Berlin, New York and in Israel where she spent a period at the Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company (IL). She then improved as a dancer and teacher at CIMD (International Center of Movement and Dance) in Milan.
